Sabarimala Season Marketing for Hotels, Lodges and Travel Operators

The Mandala–Makaravilakku season brings pilgrims from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra and Telangana through Kerala. How hotels, lodges, restaurants and travel operators along the route can reach them with Google, Maps and Meta ads.

Sabarimala season marketing guide cover, for hotels, lodges, restaurants and travel operators on the pilgrim route in Kerala

Every year during the Mandala–Makaravilakku season, from mid-November to mid-January, lakhs of pilgrims travel to Sabarimala. Many come from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, usually in groups, by bus, van or car, passing through Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Erumeli, Chengannur, Thiruvalla, Kumily and the highway towns along the way.

For hotels, lodges, restaurants and travel operators on these routes, it's one of the busiest periods of the year. Here's how to make sure pilgrims find you.

Understand how pilgrim groups travel

  • Groups, not couples. A guruswamy often leads a group of devotees. One person makes the booking decision for many.
  • Vehicles. Tempo travellers, buses and cars. Parking is a deciding factor.
  • Vegetarian food and basic, clean rooms or dormitories matter more than luxury.
  • Odd hours. Arrivals at night and departures before dawn are normal.
  • Other languages. Many groups speak Tamil, Kannada or Telugu, not Malayalam or English.
  • Last-minute decisions. Many groups decide where to stop while on the road, using Google Maps.

The official room booking at Sannidhanam and the virtual queue are run by the Travancore Devaswom Board and Kerala Police. Private businesses serve the journey around them: stays on the way, food, transport and local guidance.

Timing: prepare before the season opens

Sabarimala pilgrim season timeline: prepare in October and November, Mandala season begins mid-November, peak traffic in December and the Makaravilakku surge in January
Get ready before Vrischikam 1.

The season starts with the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, in mid-November. Check the Travancore Devaswom Board's official dates each year. Get listings, photos and prices ready in October and early November, before searches spike.

Google Maps is your most important channel

Pilgrims on the road search "lodge near Erumeli", "hotel in Pathanamthitta", "veg restaurant near Pamba road" or simply "rooms near me". Most of these searches end on the map.

  • Make sure your Google Business Profile exists, is verified and shows the right location pin.
  • Add photos of rooms, dormitories, bathrooms, dining and parking.
  • Keep hours and phone number accurate, and answer the phone.
  • Ask happy guests for reviews. Groups trust what other pilgrims say.

The details are in Google Business Profile for resorts and homestays. They apply to lodges and restaurants too. Hotels can also appear in Google's hotel results for free; see Google free booking links.

Google Search ads for the pilgrim route

A small, focused Search campaign during the season catches people actively looking:

  • Keywords like "Sabarimala room booking near Erumeli", "lodge in Pathanamthitta for Sabarimala", "Sabarimala tour package from Chennai/Bangalore/Hyderabad" for travel operators.
  • Location targeting that includes the source states and the route, not just Kerala.
  • Call assets, so groups can phone directly.
  • Clear negative keywords for searches about the official booking or virtual queue, which you can't serve.

The same basics as in Google Ads for resorts in Kerala apply, scaled down for a short season.

Meta ads for groups and operators

Meta works well for travel operators and lodges that want to reach group organisers before they leave home:

  • Target Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana cities, in the weeks before and during the season.
  • Write ads in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu. A Malayalam or English ad won't feel relevant to a group in Coimbatore or Bengaluru. See regional-language ads.
  • Show group rates, parking, vegetarian food and the distance to Pamba or Erumeli.
  • Use click-to-WhatsApp so organisers can confirm a group booking in a chat.

Be pilgrim-ready

Pilgrim-ready checklist for Sabarimala season: Google listing with correct pin, photos of rooms and parking, group and dormitory rates, replies in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu, parking, vegetarian food and early check-in, and a phone answered at all hours
Show groups you're ready for how they travel.

The marketing only works if the experience matches. Pilgrim groups remember who treated them well and come back every year, often with bigger groups. A lodge that answers at 3 am, has parking for a bus and serves good vegetarian food earns repeat business for years.

After the season

Collect phone numbers of group organisers (with permission) and keep in touch on WhatsApp. Next year's season starts with a message to last year's guruswamis, often before any ad runs. That's the cheapest booking channel you'll ever have.
