Digital Marketing for Resorts in Kerala: How to Get Direct Bookings Without OTAs
OTAs take 15–25% of every booking. Here is a practical digital marketing plan for Kerala resorts and homestays to win direct bookings, with real numbers from a Munnar resort: 5.9x ROAS in its best month.

Kerala's resorts, homestays and houseboats compete for the same travellers on the same OTAs, and pay 15–25% commission on every stay for the privilege. Direct bookings change the economics. Here is how to win them, with numbers from a Munnar resort I run campaigns for.
Why direct bookings matter
On a ₹20,000 booking, a 20% OTA commission is ₹4,000. Win that guest directly and the margin stays with you. You also keep the guest's phone number and email, so the next stay doesn't cost a commission at all.
The goal isn't to leave OTAs. It's to stop depending on them.

One of the cheapest direct-booking tools is getting your own rate shown next to the OTAs in Google. See Google free booking links for hotels in India.
What worked for a Munnar resort
The resort runs an always-on funnel on Meta Ads and Google Ads, with every lead flowing into its CRM. The numbers, from the resort's own records:
- Best month, October 2026: ₹3.08L of ad spend produced ₹18.07L in bookings: a 5.9x return.
- Google Ads alone returned 6.4x that month.
- Leads cost an average of ₹45 across 2026.
- Average booking value was over ₹21,000.

The direct-booking plan, step by step
1. Track bookings, not likes
Before spending anything, make sure every enquiry gets recorded with an outcome: a CRM such as TeleCRM, or at minimum a shared sheet with Won / Lost and the booking value. Without this you'll never know which ads pay.
2. Meta Ads to create demand
Most Kerala travel starts on Instagram. Run three stages, always on:
- Prospecting: people interested in Munnar, Wayanad, Alleppey, Varkala, honeymoons, family trips and long weekends. Show the view, the room and the experience.
- Retargeting: people who watched your videos or visited your site. Show room types, packages and what's included.
- Closing: the highest-intent visitors, with a clear reason to book now.
Lead ads connected straight to the CRM work very well: the traveller never leaves Instagram, and your team gets the number instantly. Not sure whether to use forms or WhatsApp? Compare click-to-WhatsApp vs lead form ads.
3. Google Search to capture demand
Meta creates demand; Google captures demand that already exists. Bid on the searches where people have already decided:
- "resort with private pool in Munnar"
- "honeymoon resort Wayanad"
- "Alleppey houseboat booking"
- your own resort's name, so OTAs don't win your brand searches
For the Munnar resort, Google converted 5.6% of its leads into bookings, against 1.7% for Meta. Google brings fewer leads, but much warmer ones. Build a negative keyword list from day one, and see the full Google Ads guide for Kerala resorts.

4. Reply in minutes
Travellers message three or four properties at once. The first clear reply with a rate usually wins. Assign leads instantly, call the freshest ones first, and track response time like a revenue metric. Here's a follow-up cadence with message scripts.
5. A website that books
A slow or confusing site sends travellers back to the OTA. You need:
- Fast loading on mobile data
- Real photos of rooms, views and food
- Clear rates or "from" prices
- A WhatsApp button and a simple enquiry or booking form
- Proof: reviews, awards and guest photos
6. Bring past guests back
Repeat guests cost almost nothing to win back. Use your CRM list for anniversary offers, monsoon packages and festival stays, and retarget past guests on Meta.
Plan for Kerala's seasons
- October–March (peak): competition and CPMs rise. Keep prospecting on so retargeting pools stay full.
- April–May (summer holidays): families from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and the Gulf. Push family packages.
- June–September (monsoon): sell the monsoon itself: Ayurveda, rain retreats and off-season value.
In the Munnar resort's data, CPMs roughly doubled from March to July. Returns held because the funnel and follow-up kept converting, which is the point of building a system rather than running seasonal bursts.

The year-end rush needs its own plan. I cover packages, pricing and timing in Christmas and New Year packages for Kerala resorts.
What it costs
A practical start for a single property is ₹1,000–₹3,000 a day across Meta and Google, scaled up once you know your cost per booking. See what Meta Ads cost in India for real CPMs and cost per lead.
